Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore
A comic opera, in two acts,
In English, in a new translation by Peter Melville
Caricature of Gaetano Donizetti.
Donizetti, often completing works at great speed, including L’Elisir d’Amore in around fourteen days, was evidently also quick witted:
"Donizetti, when asked which of his own operas he thought the best, spontaneously replied, 'How can I say which? A father always has a preference for a crippled child, and I have so many.'" (Louis Engel: "From Mozart to Mario", 1886)
